                      • Essentials of Field Management, Unit 2: Core & Shell - March 15, 22, 24, 29, 31

                        Overview - Unit 2: Core & Shell 
                        In this unit, students will learn about contracting considerations, including structural systems, and building envelope systems. Additionally, there is an emphasis on proper weather barrier installations, glass and glazing systems and masonry. An overview of major equipment which includes HVAC, elevators and escalators is also included.

                        Session 1: Cast-In-Place Concrete and Post Tensioned Concrete
                        Cast-in-Place Concrete
                        The Cast in Place (CIP) concrete session is designed to give students basic information they need to effectively manage CIP projects. Students will learn about the different types of CIP applications and how the applications have different elements and considerations. Additionally, students will learn about safety, quality, schedule and inspection considerations as well as how weather impacts CIP projects.

                        Post-tensioned Concrete
                        The post-tensioned (PT) concrete instruction is designed to give students the information they need to effectively manage PT projects. Students will learn about what post-tensioning of concrete is and some of the common applications of post-tensioned concrete. Additionally, students will learn about the structural design elements of PT as well as key design, schedule, and inspection considerations.

                        Session 2: Structural Steel
                        Structural Steel
                        In this session students will learn about the specific considerations for structural steel, including steel procurements, safety, inspections, scheduling, crane operations, steel erection, and as-built drawings.

                        Session 3: Weather Barrier Installation, Dry-In and Glass & Glazing Systems
                        Weather Barriers
                        This session will describe the weather barrier concept, materials, manufacturers products and their practical applications. Participants will learn how different products are designed and how they should be installed correctly to meet the design intent of the architect team.

                        Glass and Glazing Systems
                        The Glass and Glazing instruction is designed to give students the information they need to effectively manage glass and glazing within a project. Students will learn about the different types of glass used in commercial construction and the critical considerations for the different types of glass. Students will also examine glazing systems and learn about the critical considerations associated with these systems. Finally, students will be exposed to considerations for punched window openings and borrowed lites/side lites.

                        Session 4: Masonry
                        Masonry 
                        This session covers the general topics of masonry related to typical projects with a focus on the aspects of planning and directing the successful outcome required.
                           
                        Session 5: Major Equipment: HVAC, Elevators, Escalators 
                        HVAC
                        In this session, students will learn about the systems, equipment and installation involved with HVAC systems. Specifically, this instruction will focus on the various pieces of distribution equipment. Additionally, an overview of issues that may arise, as well as closing out the project will be discussed.

                        Elevators
                        This instruction covers the pre-installation, installation, and post installation of elevators. Students will receive an overview of the role of the subcontractor as well as precautions that need to take place while installing elevators.

                         
                        Escalators
                        Students will learn about the key considerations when engaged in supervising an escalator installation project. Students will first look at procurement considerations and coordination efforts required for escalator installation. Then they will focus on the installation process, inspection process and the required finishes for an escalator project.
